No two people experience headaches or migraines exactly the same way; although,
certain symptoms and presentations can be considered classic for a specific kind of
headache pattern. Migraines, although commonly considered a 'severe headache,' are
much more than that. New research is demonstrating that migraines are caused by
hereditary triggers that signal hyperactive nerve cells in the brain to signal local blood
vessels to first constrict, then dilate, initiating a cascade of inflammatory chemicals that
lead to pain. Like headaches, many things can trigger migraines, such as imbalances
of the musculoskeletal or blood supply in the neck and head, hormone imbalances,
emotional issues, weather, and sensitivities to foods, food additives, and caffeine. The
presentation of migraines and related symptoms also varies widely. They can involve
one or both sides of the head; they usually begin as a dull ache and progress to a full throb.
It is common for migraines to present with a series of symptoms that warn the person of
an oncoming migraine - this is termed an 'aura.' Auras happen in about 20-30% of migraine sufferers, and can affect vision, taste, nausea, smell and physical sensation.
Adjustments to the neck and skull will be utilized in conjunction with soft tissue treatments such as Active Release Technique®. Acupuncture may also be advised as it is often successful in decreasing inflammation/edema, as well as significantly improving pain levels.
